NT opposition leader urged to oppose Indigenous Voice by senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price

Country Liberal senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price says her party's leader in the Northern Territory Parliament needs to consider the views of its members, after they voted to reject an Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Speaking on Sunday, Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price praised delegates of the Country Liberal Party (CLP) for voting overwhelmingly in favour of opposing the Voice.

The vote was held at the CLP's Central Council meeting at Lake Bennett Resort on Saturday, after several branches of the party moved motions on the issue.

Last week, NT Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro indicated her parliamentary team could adopt a stance in favour of the Voice, even if the CLP rank and file endorsed the No campaign.

But Senator Nampijinpa Price said party members held concerns that enshrining an Indigenous Voice in the constitution would divide the country "along the lines of race".

"That's the fundamental principle to begin with, before we go into any other detail that we're concerned about," she said.

The vote means the CLP's official stance is in lock step with the Nationals, which last year came out with a similar platform.

Senator Nampijinpa Price urged Ms Finocchiaro to adopt the stance taken by the party rank and file.

"I think it's really important that when you belong to a party, that you are expressing the values and leading with the values of the party," she said.

"That's what I would certainly urge for anybody who is part of the Country Liberal Party as an elected representative."

Ms Finocchiaro has previously said she supports the "concept" of the Voice but had concerns about a lack of detail around the proposal from Canberra.

She also said it was "not unusual" for the CLP's parliamentary team in the NT Legislative Assembly to hold differing political positions from its membership.

Ms Finocchiaro's office said she was not available for comment on Sunday.

Territory Labor says stance 'incredibly disappointing'

Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said Saturday's vote by members showed the opposition leader had "absolutely no control over the CLP".

"[The CLP's stance] is incredibly disappointing, it's short-sighted," she said.

"We've seen appalling leadership from the leader of the opposition."

Ms Fyles said her party remained "focused on the Voice" ahead of the referendum due in the second half of this year.

In parliament last week, the CLP abstained from voting on a motion supporting the Voice to Parliament, arguing it had not yet been provided with enough detail on the proposal by the federal government.

However, NT Aboriginal Affairs Minister Selena Uibo said the CLP had access to the Indigenous Voice co-design report, written by Professors Tom Calma and Marcia Langton, and given to the federal National Party in 2021.

"There's two years of reading there if the CLP wanted to educate themselves," Ms Uibo told ABC Radio this morning.

"I think it's just laziness."
