NSW won't rush to change P-plate laws

Advice will be sought on restricting how many passengers can ride with P-platers on NSW roads following a "horrendous" crash that killed five teenagers, says Premier Dominic Perrottet.

Three girls, two aged 14 and one 15, and two boys, 15 and 16, died when a ute crashed into a tree near the Wollondilly Shire village of Buxton on Tuesday night.

Driver Tyrell Edwards has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and will face Picton Local Court on Thursday.

Edwards, 18, was reportedly a green P-plater.

Mr Perrottet was asked on Thursday if it was time to consider laws similar to those in Victoria.

Red P-platers in the southern state can only carry one passenger aged between 16 and 22 unless they are an emergency worker, have a fully-licenced driver next to them or have an exemption issued by VicRoads.

Siblings, step-siblings and partners are exempted from the peer passenger count.

Mr Perrottet said he'd seek advice on whether NSW should follow Victoria's lead.

"But I really don't believe today is the time to be talking about public policy decisions," he told reporters.

"This is a horrendous, horrendous tragedy. We have families and friends in utter grief.

"If there are public policy decisions to be made, we will."

P1 or red P-platers aged under 25 in NSW are currently not permitted to drive with more than one passenger under 21 between the hours of 11pm and 5am.

P2 or green P-platers must ensure all occupants, including themselves, are in a seat that has a seatbelt or an approved restraint fitted, and that each passenger is using the seatbelt or restraint.
