A man from northern New South Wales has been charged over alleged threats to kill former political staffer Brittany Higgins, her fiance and their dog.
Detectives from the NSW Police Terrorism Investigation Squad arrested David William Wonnocott, 49, at Tweed Heads Police Station yesterday morning, charging him with using a carriage service to make a threat to kill and using a carriage service to harass or offend.
Police allegedly uncovered 49 messages containing threats or "offensive content" sent from several different accounts, which they believe were linked.
They will allege Mr Wonnocott sent messages to fiance David Sharaz via social media threatening to kill him, Ms Higgins and their pet dog.
Police said they were also investigating an allegation of threats of violence made on a social media platform "in relation to participants of a mass gathering".
Officers have searched the man's home in Banora Point and his car.
He has been granted bail to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court next month and has been banned from possessing any weapons or firearms.
Ms Higgins is a former Liberal staffer who made a claim of sexual assault against a colleague in Parliament House in 2019.
The charges were dropped last year and no findings have been made over the accusations.
