New South Wales has been issued with urgent electricity blackout warnings this afternoon so chuck your phone on charge now and make sure you’re stocked up with ice.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has warned there is a heightened risk of blackouts throughout the state between 3.30pm and 5pm due to the high energy use with air conditioners during the Spring heat wave. It also states that Thursday is at risk of a blackout due to ongoing heatwave conditions.
The blackout risk is exacerbated by four of 12 power-generation units being out of action due to breakdowns and maintenance.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, AEMO is in negotiations with big energy-using businesses like factories who can be paid to reduce energy use, in the hopes that blackouts won’t be triggered for households.
“AEMO remains focused on maintaining electricity reliability in both NSW and Queensland this week, as high temperatures are expected to drive strong energy demand amid significant generation unavailability in NSW,” a spokesman said, per Sydney Morning Herald.
“If electricity supply forecasts deteriorate, AEMO will take all necessary measures, including the activation of off-market reserves, to ensure supply reliability.”
NSW is currently experiencing its most severe heatwave since November 2020, with 2024 on track to become the hottest year on record.
The hot weather is expected to continue for the next week.
