Police have extradited a NSW woman living in New Zealand over the alleged murder of a two-year-old girl more than 30 years ago.
The cold case dates back to mid-1987, when the toddler was allegedly assaulted then murdered, with her remains disposed of at a rural property at Porters Retreat near Oberon in central NSW.
In October 2019, detectives from the Unsolved Homicide Unit received a tip-off about the young girl's disappearance.
This led to a 70-year-old man being arrested on November 16, 2021, at Porters Retreat and charged over his alleged role in the murder. He remains before the courts.
On the same day, New Zealand Police arrested a 59-year-old woman at a property in the North Island city of Palmerston North, in relation to a NSW warrant.
She has been held in custody in New Zealand since that time, as Australian authorities worked to seek her extradition.
Detectives travelled to New Zealand and escorted the woman back to Sydney where she is expected to be charged with murder.
