The NSW education minister has apologised to HSC students after an IT bungle led to the early release of their results.
The glitch caused widespread confusion amongst students as some managed to see their preliminary HSC marks on Saturday morning on the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) website — five days before they were due to be released.
Student login was shut down within hours of going live after the mistake was discovered.
Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said she had not yet been told how many students had been affected, but believed it was "a small number".
"Obviously, we're very disappointed that this has happened, I've asked NESA for a full explanation as to why and how this has occurred," she said.
"We apologise to any students who might be stressed out by this."
It's the second time this year HSC results have been mistakenly released early.
In January, thousands of 2021 HSC students were able to access merit lists on the NESA website days before results were due to be released.
NSW Shadow Education Minister Prue Car said the latest leak was "deeply concerning".
"This bungle has just added unnecessary stress on students, many of whom have no certainty if they were shown their final results or no," she said.
"The NSW government should give certainty to HSC students today and ensure all students can see their results equally."
A NESA spokesperson said in a statement "some students" had access to their results "for a short period".
"NESA is investigating the cause of the issue and sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused," the statement said.
The final HSC results are due to be released on Thursday.
