NSS escalates attacks on caste -based reservation

Escalating his attack on the caste-based reservation system, G. Sukumaran Nair, general secretary of the Nair Service Society (NSS), here on Tuesday reiterated the organisation’s position that the existing system of reservation would benefit only the creamy layer among the backward communities.

Inaugurating the 110th Vijayadashami Day Nair meeting at Perunna on Tuesday, Mr. Nair noted that the caste-based reservation system, which had been stipulated only for a particular time period, was continuing without any review or scientific data.

“Economically weaker sections in as many as 164 forward communities have now been awarded 10% reservation. To ensure reservation for all economically backward people across the communities, caste-based reservation system should be abolished,” he said.

He also accused attempts by some sections to divide the people in the name of caste. “It is so unfortunate that the governments and the political parties have supported such moves in the name of vote banks,” he said.

The Vijayadashami Day Nairs’ meet marks one of the most significant events for the NSS, as it also commemorates the formation of the community organisation. It was during the event in 1913 that the initial form of the NSS-the Taluk Nair Samajam was constituted. The Changanassery taluk union of the NSS in association with NSS headquarters organises the event every year to celebrate the occasion.
