The job market is brutal these days, even people that actually make it through the countless questionnaires, interviews, and other vetting procedures aren’t safe. One woman on TikTok was informed she’d lost her job a mere two days after being hired and spent $160 on the mandatory uniform.
TikToker @Stephghetti shared her reaction to unjustly being fired to the video-sharing app, explaining that after getting the job she spent $160 on their “VERY SPECIFIC uniform which they insisted I needed.” However, after purchasing the required uniform she was swiftly fired with the company’s excuse being they “didn’t have the capacity to train [her],” Although Steph claims she had ten years experience and wouldn’t have required much training.
That’s an awfully crummy thing to do but what’s even worse is the fact her now ex-employers refused to even re-imburse her for the very expensive purchase she had to make. Oh and at the time of recording the video they had yet to pay her for her time meaning she actually lost money and time during her all too brief employment.
With the cost of living rising and jobs being harder to find this seems like an outright slap in the face, people work to make money, not lose it. Commenters suggested that Steph go to a small claims court and sue them for the maximum amount she could (which is $5k). They explained the company had possibly hired her under false pretences so she could definitely have a case, even if she doesn’t need the money it’s a matter of principle. They also recommended filing a fraud report.
Which company was it?
In situations like this people naturally want to know the name of the business, perhaps to boycott, or at least avoid applying for jobs there in the future. Thankfully Steph was more than happy to name and shame the company.
The business in question was a fancy restaurant in Toronto called Abrielle. Upon finding out the name tons of angry people flooded the establishment’s socials demanding they reimburse Steph for her expensive uniform. “Sounds super shady what you did.” reads a comment on the restaurant’s Instagram, “pay her what she is owed and the pay her back for the uniform. That’s scammy as hell.” Eventually Abrielle turned off the comments.
As of writing Steph has yet to confirm whether she’s gotten paid by the restaurant but in an update video she stated that she was struggling to find work and had to go on social assistance. She also thanked the people of TikTok for their sympathy to her situation.
