Novak Djokovic says that he has no regrets about missing this year's US Open despite missing the chance for a 22nd Grand Slam title.
The 35-year-old has won at Flushing Meadows three times but was prevented from playing last month due to his stance against the Covid-19 vaccine. The Wimbledon winner was left watching from home but said he has no regrets over his decision.
Djokovic's absence opening the door for teenager talent Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 to win his first Grand Slam title.
“No, I don’t have any regrets, said Djokovic. "I do feel sad that I wasn’t able to play, but that was the decision that I made.
"I knew what the consequences will be, so I accepted them. That’s it. I mean, I congratulate (Carlos) Alcaraz for winning the US Open. He did it in an incredible fashion, in three or four five-set matches in the tournament.
"He’s 19 years old and already number one in the world.”
Djokovic has won the Australian Open nine times but missed out on defending his crown last season after becoming embroiled in a visa saga that made headlines around the world. Eventually, a court ordered him to be deported a day before the tournament began.
The Serbian star was also handed a three-year ban from revisiting the country, seemingly ruling him of competing down under until at least 2024. The Australian Government are reportedly considering relaxing laws and travellers would not need to provide proof of a Covid vaccination anymore.
“I’m waiting for the news,” Djokovic added. “It’s really not in my hands right now. I’m hoping I can get some positive news soon.”
This weekend Djokovic joins Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer playing for Team Europe in the Laver Cup. It's the first time the four stars have played in the tournament alongside each other.
Djokovic previously played in the 2018 Laver Cup with Federer but Nadal was absent, while Murray is making his first appearance in the competition.
Djokovic tweeted: "Once in a lifetime experience to be on the same court with these legends and rivals. Thank you Laver Cup for making it possible. Looking forward to a great weekend of tennis and a celebration of Roger Federer’s career."
