Nottinghamshire woman given £500 fine for letting rubbish pile up in garden

A Sutton resident has been fined more than £500 after leaving bags of rubbish piled up in her garden despite complaints from her neighbours. Lesley Staniland, of Hardwick Lane, has appeared in court after failing to listen to several warnings about the state of her garden.

She was eventually issued with a Community Protection Notice and despite offers of support, the community safety team at Ashfield District Council had to take the case to court. Staniland appeared at Mansfield Magistrates' Court on August 18, where she was found guilty of breaching her Community Protection Notice.

She eventually removed the waste from her garden after being fined £500 and being forced to pay a victim surcharge of £50. The council was also awarded costs of £603.22.

Councillor Helen-Ann Smith, the Executive Lead Member for Community Safety and Crime Reduction at Ashfield District Council, said "This is another fantastic result for the community safety team. She ignored numerous warnings to clear the waste from her garden and showed total disregard for her neighbours and the environment. A problem that was easy to fix has now resulted in a costly fine.

"This case should act as a warning to all those that think it is okay to dump waste in their gardens and get away with it. The council is committed to dealing with anti-social behaviour and the minority who negatively impact other residents' lives."
