Nottinghamshire Police have stopped and punished a BMW driver who was found to be driving with tinted windows that let in only 16 per cent of light. The force's roads policing unit said the required amount was 75 per cent through the front windscreen, meaning the motorist's windows were more than four times too dark.
They posted on Twitter: "BMW stopped with tinted windows which were so tinted that it was only allowing 16% light into the car. The front windscreen must let at least 75% of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70% of light through.
"BMW prohibited and driver reported #Prohibited."
What the law says
According to Gov.UK, in vehicles first used on 1 April 1985 or later the front windscreen must let at least 75 per cent of light through and the front side windows must let at least 70 per cent of light through.
If your windscreen or front side windows are tinted too much you could get:
- a ‘prohibition notice’ stopping you using your vehicle on the road until you have the extra tint removed
- a penalty notice or court summons
