Nottinghamshire neighbours wonder ‘when does it stop’ as 141 homes proposed

People in Sutton-In-Ashfield wonder when the building is ‘going to stop’ as 141 homes have been proposed. The outline planning application proposes the development for agricultural land next to Brand Lane, Stanton Hill.

This includes Stubbin Hill Farm which is currently in the middle of the site. The plans show 127 homes for market housing and 14 homes set for affordable housing.

Next to the site is a brand new housing development by Harron Homes, on Brand Lane. With some already built the development is set to have 171 homes. Residents that live on Fackley Way, off Brand Lane, say it’s ridiculous and show concern over the loss of green belt land.

Homeowner Mark Hopkins, 56, told Nottinghamshire Live that brown belt land would be better used for new homes. The gardener said: “I think there’s enough houses to be honest. Especially with the new houses around the back. When does it stop? Does it keep going and going? I know we have to progress but maybe we need to stop and use brown belt land.

Mr Hopkins added: ”Maybe in years and years when in demand. But brown belt makes more sense, it’s disused and ugly. I understand we need new houses and definitely should use the brown belt. The only thing I say is use the brown belt and once you’ve exhausted the brown belt then go into the green belt.”

Kenneth Taylor, who has lived in the area for 25 years showed concern for the wildlife. The 78-year-old said: “I’m not happy about it. It’s a nature reserve here. There’s green woodpeckers, all sorts, long eared owls, short eared owls.

“There’s a doctor and that's it, one doctor and one chemist. That is prime green belt land and they’ve stolen it. They picked up all the prime land. I’m disgusted. What about the brown belt in town? The loss of green space and access to it.”

Mr Underwood, 58, who has lived in the area his whole life, told Nottinghamshire Live that there is concern with lack of infrastructure. He said:“It’s absolutely ridiculous. By the time they’re done building all these homes, they are going to have enough cars and families with kids. The other estate opposite rose and crown. They shouldn’t build any, we don’t want building here.

He added: “You can’t get into the doctors, the school that’s full. Where are they going to go? Where are they going to shop? There’s little shops but the only decent shop is co op. It’s not got the infrastructure.”

Grace Roe, 94, says it will get overcrowded with new homes. Mrs Roe said: “You don’t know what to do, people want houses but don’t want it to be overcrowded. It’s going to be crowded isn’t it. It’s quite nice there but it will be a big space taken up.”
