Nottinghamshire lorry incident was 'accident waiting to happen', say residents

An incident where a lorry shed its load on a Nottinghamshire street - forcing its closure for hours - was an accident waiting to happen, residents have said. Two flatbed lorries carrying large loads were cordoned off in Thackeray's Lane just past its junction with Fisher Avenue in Woodthorpe on Tuesday, May 30.

Later that evening the same lorry was involved in an incident in nearby Sandfield Road, which left a car damaged. Modular Movements, the firm responsible for transporting the wide load, said it was investigating the incident.

"The company is aware of an incident. We are currently investigating and are unable to comment further until this investigation is complete," read a statement by the firm.

Residents around the area of the two incidents said lorries frequently used the route to transport parts of factory built homes to a 131-house development off Rolleston Drive. ilke Homes, which is delivering the homes, has been approached for comment.

Paul Clark, who lives in Sandfield Road, said: "They've been coming up here for a good six months, it's the second load today. Sometimes you don't see them for a couple of weeks then there'll be two or three in a day."

Jacqueline Shaw, who was visiting her mum near Thackeray's Lane at the time of the first incident, said: "It was just a matter of time. When you get big trucks coming up places like this accidents are bound to happen, they're just too big for these roads.

"But I don't think there's any better access roads in." One couple, who have lived in Thackeray's Lane for 20 years, said it was an "accident waiting to happen".

"The guys are really careful going past here but it's so narrow," said a man who didn't wish to be named. "I've always said something was going to happen but it's been fine up to now.

"Nothing much can be done about it. It's lucky that it didn't happen last week." A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire County Council said: "This incident was managed by the police.

"Our teams were not involved although we are going to undertake an inspection of the tree at some point." Nottinghamshire Police have been approached for comment.
