The roof of a Nottinghamshire village hall has been completely destroyed by an ongoing fire, a councillor has said. Crews from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at the village hall in Gotham after a fire broke out earlier this morning (Thursday, February 16).
Five crews are currently tackling the blaze, with firefighters asking all residents of Boswell Crescent and Wodehouse Avenue to keep their windows and doors shut due to smoke. "We are currently dealing with a fire at the village hall in Gotham, near Ruddington. There are five fire engines on the scene and the Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP)," the fire service said in a statement.
"We’re asking all residents of Boswell Crescent and Wodehouse Avenue to keep their windows and doors shut due to smoke and for the public to avoid the area whilst we deal with this incident." Gillian May, chairman of Gotham Parish Council, told Nottinghamshire Live the hall roof had been "completely destroyed".
"The hall will be out of operation for the foreseeable future," she said. "There's a GP practice there also affected. Thankfully there are no reports of any injuries at this stage. The cause is not known for definite right now. It's awful for the community. We'd like to thank the fire service for their fast response and their work."
