A Nottinghamshire woman has published a book reliving her life as an exotic dancer in the 1960s in clubs run by the Maltese mafia. Hazel Longely, from Kimberely, recalled her experiences in a new book, 'Wounds that never heal broken."
Despite attitudes in the sixties towards sex, there were several nightclubs across Soho that were famous for their dancers which would be similar to today's burlesque performers. Hazel recalls how her career as a dancer started when she joined the infamous Playboy Club when she was just 19.
"I started working after I was homeless after leaving home. An English gentleman offered me a job in the Playboy Club. I said yes because I needed the money but I was so innocent. At that time, there was another club nearby that didn't have a name on it but I later realised they were strip joints. There were women standing in the doorway trying to entice the men in to pay," she said.
