A Nottingham University building has been named the 'building of the year' in the East Midlands. The Lyth Building, which belongs to Nottingham Trent University on its Brackenhurst Campus, scooped the award this month.
The Brackenhurst Campus, in Southwell, is home to the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences and the Lyth Building is the initial element of a major investment plan to improve the facilities, teaching and research for staff, students and visiting members of the public.
The awards jury said of the project: “The Lyth sits elegantly into its context of listed buildings and designed landscapes, while giving a centre and focus to the burgeoning campus of NTU. It has raised the bar for future development.”

RIBA President, Simon Allford said: “Winning a regional Building of the Year Award is a major achievement. Across the country projects have been selected for this accolade because they are exemplars of the very best of innovative, intelligent and delightful design.
"The results of positive collaboration between architect and client, and design team and contractor, they demonstrate that high quality, sustainable architecture can positively impact the lives of the people that engage with it. My warmest congratulations to all those involved.”
The RIBA Regional Building of the Year Awards were presented at a ceremony at the RIBA’s Headquarters in London on Tuesday evening, May 24. All RIBA East Midlands Award winners will now be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced in June.
The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year.
Steve Denton, Nottingham Trent University’s Chief Operating Officer and Registrar, said: “‘The Lyth is a stunning and prominent building which has further transformed our Brackenhurst Campus into a vibrant and cohesive environment for students to learn and be inspired by. Winning East Midlands Building of the Year is a remarkable achievement and we’re very proud of everyone involved in the project who have helped us deliver this award-winning building.”
