Nottingham travellers' verdict as Boris Johnson resigns as Prime Minister

Travellers pitched up at a popular Nottingham beauty spot have spoken out after Boris Johnson officially resigned as Prime Minister. Many said it "was about time" that he leaves Number 10 after 'turning the world upside down'.

Mr Johnson took to the lectern on Thursday, July 7 to make a statement of his resignation as Conservative Party leader. He could remain caretaker PM for some time longer, however, while the Tory party leadership battle takes place.

Romani families arrived at the Southglade Park said they do not get involved in politics, and they are more "people of the land". However, many were excited after learning that Boris Johnson will no longer be Prime Minister.

Ann Lee, a mum of two, said: "He has turned the world upside down. It was about time that he would go."

The 28-year-old said: "I think it is for the best. This country will get better without him in power.

"He has done so many bad things. We are better off without him."

Asked if she thinks that a traveller would be doing a better job than him, she added: "God no. It would be mad, the world would be upside down.

"I do not vote, and I do not get involved in politics. But you do not have to know politics to realise that what he did was wrong."

Peter Rogers, 46, also added: "Finally some good news. It was a long time coming.

"I am obviously happy and a bit relieved. The world has gone mad with him as leader.

"I do not know whatever is next, but it is hard to think that it would be worse than him. That is brilliant that he is finally gone."

His leadership is expected to come to an end after a string of resignations in the cabinet, with some of the most high profile resignations including chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid.
