Nottingham Forest's Hwang Ui-jo was on the end of criticism from BBC co-commentator Danny Murphy for an ‘awful’ moment against Uruguay.
The forward, who is currently on loan at Olympiacos, is representing South Korea in the tournament in Qatar. The 30-year-old was named in the starting line up for their group H opener vs Uruguay on Thursday afternoon.
Hwang had arguably one of the best chances to put South Korea 1-0 up in the first half as he found himself in on goal in the middle of the box. However, the Forest man could only blaze over the bar as he tried to find the top corner.

The miss prompted criticism from former England midfielder Murphy, who was on co-commentary duty for BBC One, the pundit highlighting how the striker missed what was one of the best opportunities of the game.
“It’s a gilt-edged chance,” Murphy said during commentary. “He’s leaning back, he’s trying to put it in the far corner but he’s not stayed over the ball. It’s an awful miss.”
Another pundit in Clinton Morrison also reacted to the miss. “He has to score,” the former striker said.
“He is only seven yards out. He is leaning back, just lean over it and pass it into the net.”
The miss did prove to be one of the best chances of the game, with both teams eventually playing out a 0-0 draw. Though Hwang could have been regretting his miss even more when Uruguay hit the post from a corner in the closing stages of the game.
It’s not only international football where the striker has been finding life difficult so far this season. Hwang has failed to score in his 11 appearances in all competitions for Olympiacos this season.
Reports earlier this month claimed that the club are ready to send the forward back to Forest over the World Cup break. He signed for Forest in the summer, joining from Ligue 2 side Girodins Bordeaux for a fee of around £4 million.
