Nottingham Forest 'signal' £17m summer transfer bid for in-demand teenager

Nottingham Forest have reportedly indicated they will make a fresh attempt to sign highly-rated Brazilian youngster Angelo Gabriel in the summer.

The 18-year-old was on the Reds’ radar last month and they made a push to sign him before the January window closed, but he ended up staying with Santos. An initial offer of 15 million euros (£13m) is said to have been rebuffed, before the club increased their bid to 18m euros (£16m).

According to Brazilian outlet Bola VIP, Forest - along with Premier League rivals Newcastle United - “have already signalled” to Santos they will return to the negotiating table in a few months’ time. It is said 20m euros (£17.7m) could be put forward to try to secure Gabriel’s services.

It comes amid an attempt by Flamengo to pip them to the post. Bola report the Brazilian side have returned with a second offer of a cash plus player deal, but that bid is expected to be turned down amid anticipation of the Reds and Newcastle trying their luck.

And there could be further interest in the teenager come the summer. AC Milan, PSG, Manchester City and Liverpool have also been linked.

Earlier this week, Italian website Calciomercato suggested there is a 60m euro (£52m) clause in Gabriel’s contract, but added that figure is unlikely to be met in any bidding war. It was also claimed Barcelona have a “sort of first refusal” on the player and have put forward the idea of a loan with a right to buy, initially being registered as an academy player who would train and play for the first-team.
