Nottingham Forest show 'concrete' transfer interest in World Cup star

Nottingham Forest have been linked with Morocco international Selim Amallah ahead of the January transfer window.

The Reds are plotting reinforcements next month, both to help boost their survival bid and as a result of a lengthy long-term absentee list. Head coach Steve Cooper is keen to bring in players who can slot straight into his starting XI.

Reports in Belgium claim there is “concrete interest” from Forest in Amallah, who is expected to leave Standard Liege. But they are not the only ones keen.

The 26-year-old caught the eye for Morocco as they impressed at the World Cup. Those performances are said to have led to Valencia also keeping tabs on him.

Newspaper Het Nieuwsblad report Amallah is set to “cash in on his strong World Cup with a nice foreign transfer”. His contract with Standard is due to expire at the end of the season, and with talks on an extension having collapsed, he is said to be training with their B squad. That leaves the club “willing” to pick up a “limited transfer fee” for him, rather than seeing him walk away for nothing in the summer.

The attacking midfielder made the move to the Belgian side from Royal Excel Mouscron in 2019. He has featured nine times for them this season, scoring four goals.

He was a regular for Morocco in Qatar and started their quarter-final victory over Portugal. He was then a substitute against France in the semi-finals and against Croatia in the third-place play-off match.

Forest boss Cooper has said of January: “The first idea of players coming in will be to improve the starting team, there's no doubt about that. Maybe we have to think about some strength in depth in some positions because of injuries.

"But for sure, if we bring players in we need to bring players that we think can go straight on the pitch and make a difference. Although we were doing okay just before the break - a little bit better, not quite where we want to be - we’re still in the league position we’re in and, over a phase, we need to do things a lot better than what we have done so far. To do that, you need to change the team up a little bit, change the squad a little bit and look for the right solutions to improve."
