Nottingham Forest receive response after Aston Villa transfer battle tipped

Nottingham Forest have been tipped to be in contention to sign Crystal Palace captain Wilfried Zaha in January.

The 30-year-old has been the subject of near-constant speculation throughout his second stint at Selhurst Park. Zaha is a pivotal part of Patrck Vieira's side but his contract is currently set to expire in the summer, leading to suggestions that clubs could look to tempt Palace to cash in during the January window.

The Ivory Coast international has scored six goals and provided two assists in 13 league games this term, operating as either a winger or centre-forward. Ahead of the transfer window reopening next month, Forest have been suggested to be in contention for his signature, according to bookmaker Sky Bet .

Aston Villa are ranked as favourites at 2/1 but Steve Cooper ’s side are only valued slightly behind the frontrunners. Forest are rated at 3/1 to secure his signature, with seven other Premier League sides also suggested to be in contention.

When asked about Zaha’s future in November, Vieira was not overly concerned but gave an honest assessment of the situation. “We know how important it is for us and, again, he knows how much the fans, the club love him and we know how much he loves the football club as well,” he said .

“So the decision has to be his decision, and we will do everything in our side to keep him because he is an important player for the football club, but then we will see.”

Following the initial claims that Forest could be in the hunt for Zaha , it brought a mixed response from supporters. One fan wrote: “Yes please. Always been very talented.”

A second supporter wasn’t as enthusiastic: “Rather not. We'd pay an inflated price and he's 30 years old. Goes down too easily. He will feel he is the 'star player' at Forest. No thanks.” A third held similar sentiments: “No thanks, we have similar talented players who we've already paid for, he's good but no better than what we've got.”

Whereas others suggested that Forest stood no chance of signing Zaha: “Why would he come to us” A fifth fan expanded on this by claiming the Reds should make a move for Cristiano Ronaldo instead: “Let's sign Ronaldo on a freebie. When we play Man U and he sticks 3 in the back of their net.”

Would Zaha be a good signing for Forest? Let us know in the comments section…
