Nottingham Forest's attempt to hijack a high-profile Premier League transfer has reportedly failed as Idrissa Gana Gueye closes in on a return to Everton.
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is said to be keen to leave the French capital after the club signed former Swansea City player and Portugal international Renato Sanches from Lille.
Everton have been heavily linked with the 32-year-old, who previously lined out for the Merseyside outfit. The Senegal international made 108 appearances for the Toffees between 2016 and 2019 before earning himself a move to PSG.

He has enjoyed a successful spell with Les Parisiens, winning two leagues, two French cups and reaching the Champions League final in 2020, which they ultimately lost to Bayern Munich. But with just one year left on his contract, the club reportedly want to cash in so that he doesn't leave for nothing next season.
It is understood Gueye has set his sights on a return to the Premier League, prompting Forest to make him an offer, according to French outlet Foot Mercato. But the player has apparently rejected a three-year deal put in front of him.
Instead, he will reportedly return to the familiar surroundings of Goodison Park to help manager Frank Lampard in his bid to stave off relegation for a second season in a row. A skilled ball winner in the middle of the park, Gueye is a popular figure among the Everton faithful after his initial spell at the club.
