Nottingham Forest contract clause revealed as transfer 'interest' in promising defender emerges

Defender Serge Aurier has revealed he has an automatic one-year extension on his Nottingham Forest contract which will be triggered if survival is secured.

The 30-year-old put pen to paper at the City Ground last September, joining as a free agent after leaving Villarreal. Since then, he has become a key figure for the Reds, being a regular in the starting XI until he picked up a calf injury during the 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Talks have been held over extending Aurier’s stay Trentside. But the right-back says there is no rush to agree longer terms as his 12 month deal will automatically be extended if Forest stay up - something he is convinced Steve Cooper ’s side will do.

Transfer talk

Nottingham Forest are reportedly monitoring Hull City defender Jacob Greaves ahead of next season.

The 22-year-old is regarded as a top prospect outside of the top-flight. He came through the Tigers' youth set-up, before making his first senior appearance in 2020.

Greaves has enjoyed another campaign at the MKM Stadium, and is comfortable operating in different positions, such as central defence and left-back. He was the subject of strong interest from Middlesbrough last summer, though remained at the club after Boro's bid fell short.

Having surpassed the 100-game mark for the Tigers, Greaves is catching the eye of a host of Premier League sides. Alongside Forest, Brentford and Aston Villa are also claimed to be interested, according to the Daily Mail.

Pundit's verdict

Former Rangers striker Ally McCoist has said the next three games for Nottingham Forest will be "vital" to determine their Premier League survival hopes.

Forest have seen a turn in form since the start of the campaign, picking up vital home wins against Liverpool, Leicester City, Leeds and Crystal Palace while, holding Chelsea and Manchester City to a draw. However, their form away from home has not been so consistent, having lost to Fulham and West Ham in recent weeks.

Steve Cooper's side are 13th after picking up six wins this season, leaving them four points away from the relegation zone. A string of positive results in the coming weeks could be the difference for the Reds to boost their survival hopes.

Speaking on the talkSPORT breakfast show, McCoist said: "I think all the way up to 13th and Nottingham Forest. If we look at Forest, the next three or four games for them are going to be absolutely vital.

Table predicted

It was an afternoon to forget for Nottingham Forest at the London Stadium, but they are still being tipped to secure Premier League survival.

The Reds’ woes on the road continued as they were thumped 4-0 by West Ham United last weekend, with a woeful 15-minute collapse doing the damage. It places added importance on Sunday’s clash with 18th-placed Everton at the City Ground.

The gap between Forest and the bottom three has been cut to four points with 14 games remaining. It looks like the battle to stay up could go right to the wire, with plenty of twists and turns still to come.

The data experts at FiveThirtyEight are indeed forecasting a close-run race. And losing to the Hammers hasn’t altered their prediction for Steve Cooper’s side a great deal.
