Nottingham Forest closing in on unwanted Premier League record

Nottingham Forest are one game away from equalling an unwanted club record.

Monday evening’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of Leicester City made it five successive defeats for Steve Cooper’s team, who last avoided defeat on August 20 when they drew 1-1 with Everton.

A loss at home to Aston Villa on Monday evening would equal Forest’s longest losing streak in the Premier League, achieved during their 1992-93 relegation season.

That campaign, Brian Clough’s side kicked off with a 1-0 win over Liverpool then proceeded to lose the next six before a Nigel Clough goal earned them a 1-1 draw against Coventry to halt the run.

The Reds eventually finished bottom of the table on 40 points, nine adrift of safety.

But despite finishing bottom again in 1996-97 and 1998-99, they have never come close to surpassing that run of defeats - until now.

The 1996-97 season again began with a victory before ending in relegation, Kevin Campbell scoring a hat-trick in an opening-day win over Coventry. However, the longest losing sequence of that campaign only stretched to three games.

It was the same in 1998-99 which saw Forest lose 22 of the 38 games but never more than three at a time.

They did, however, lose six in a row in 1971-72 on the way to finishing 21st in the old Division One, escaping bottom spot only on goal average.

Even should they lose to Villa on Monday evening, Forest still have some way to go to match the Premier League record for the longest losing sequence in a single season.

That is held by Sunderland who lost the final 15 games of the 2002-03 campaign to, unsurprisingly, finish bottom.
