Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper being 'monitored closely' by number of clubs

A number of clubs are said to be keeping a close eye on Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper’s situation.

Today marks a year in charge at the City Ground for the Welshman, who replaced Chris Hughton at the helm last September. He has overseen a remarkable transformation in that time, taking the Reds from bottom of the Championship to the Premier League, ending their 23-year exile from the top-flight.

Cooper agreed a two-year deal when he was appointed, leaving him with 12 months left to run on his current contract. Following last season’s promotion success, owner Evangelos Marinakis stated his desire to tie the 42-year-old to fresh terms, and talks are understood to have taken place in the summer.

However, as yet, a new deal has not been signed. Cooper has frequently been quizzed on the matter, and each time has stressed his focus is on the team rather than his own personal circumstances.

He was linked with the Brighton and Hove Albion job earlier this month. And, according to the Daily Mail, his status is now “being monitored closely” by a number of clubs in England and abroad.

Cooper has previously said of his contract situation: "I don’t really think about it to be honest, it’s not something that enters my mind, I’m more interested in the team and trying to deliver the right training sessions and I’m just not interested in personal stuff.”

Asked if the head coach’s deal would be extended, Marinakis said after promotion was achieved: “Yes, Steve will be with us. He has another year left on his contract but I want him to be happy.

“I want to give him the players that make him even happier to achieve big results and to make all these fantastic fans happy.”
