Nottingham City Council in 'positive' talks for summer event to celebrate Notts County FC promotion

Nottingham City Council has announced it is in positive discussion with Notts County to organise a celebratory event this summer after the club secured its return to the Football League.

The Magpies had a remarkable victory against Chesterfield in the National League play-off final in Wembley on Saturday (May 13). It saw the Magpies return to the English Football League after a four-year exile.

A large banner was installed at Nottingham Council House by the City Council in celebration of Notts County's promotion and a message of congratulations displayed on the Victoria Centre ’s big screen. However, there was some criticism after the authority declared financial pressures unfortunately meant it was unable to organise an event celebrating the club's feat.

MP Brendan Clarke-Smith and former owner Alan Hardy both went on record stating they would pay for an event to be held in the city. Now, discussions are taking place for a celebratory summer event, according to the council.

It says ‘positive and constructive’ talks are in place for a celebratory summer event for the club's promotion. The council has been in regular contact with the club and partners to discuss options. These conversations are ongoing and details will be confirmed in due course.

Cllr David Mellen, Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “We’re delighted with Notts County’s promotion back into the EFL and understand fans' disappointment that we weren’t able to put on a civic event this week.

“A pre-season event gives us more time to look again at funding options, including contributions from partners who are keen to support a city celebration of Notts’ fantastic achievement. This will help towards the cost of full event management, security and safety.

“We’d like to thank the club for being receptive to our ideas and look forward to providing them with the event they, their fans and players deserve.”
