Nottingham City Council has revealed more details on who can expect to receive a £150 tax rebate. The Energy Bill Rebate is part of a £9 billion package announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in February, to help struggling families tackle the cost of living crisis as fuel and energy prices continue to impact homes.
In every authority, including Nottingham, the one-off £150 payment will apply to homes in council tax bands A, B, C or D. The chancellor also unveiled a £200 discount to tackle the £700-a-year rise in average household’s energy bills this month.
Who will receive the rebate?
Properties that are a homeowner's main home and banded A to D, or B and E with disabled relief, are eligible for the rebate. Second homes and unoccupied properties are excluded.
The rebate will also be given to properties that are exempt from council tax. These are:
- Students
- Severally Mentally Impaired
- Occupied Annexe
- Occupied by persons under the age of 18
When will it be paid?
The council says residents should see the rebate "from April onwards".
How will it be paid?
If the person pays by direct debit they should receive a payment directly into their bank account. If they do not pay by direct debit the city council says it will contact them to give advice on how to apply.
Who is not eligible?
Households who are on lower incomes or in receipt of the Council Tax Reduction Scheme (CTRS) and who are in higher than band D property will not receive the rebate. A fund has been provided to councils to help lower income households who may not qualify for the Energy Bill Rebate.
