Nottingham Castle King's Coronation and Eurovision screenings tickets go on sale for £1

People can now book their place at the first events in the grounds of Nottingham Castle ahead of its re-opening for £1. The grounds of the castle will host screenings of the the King's Coronation, Coronation Concert and Eurovision Final on a giant 28sqm screen with a concert-quality sound system.

On Saturday, May 6, the Coronation will be screened live from Westminster Abbey in London. In Nottingham, people have the opportunity to see the event unfold at a site which also has 1,000 years of royal history – and where a previous King Charles raised his standard over 380 years ago.

On the evening of Sunday, May 7, the Coronation Concert will be shown live from Windsor Castle, featuring music icons, a world-class orchestra and spoken word sequences delivered by stars of stage and screen. People are invited to bring picnic food and blankets for these picnic-style screening events to celebrate the Coronation and food and drink will also be available to buy on site.

The last screening on Saturday, May 13 will be a live broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final. Nottingham is an official BBC broadcast partner and will be streaming the event live from Liverpool.

For this concert-style screening, picnics cannot be brought on site, but there will be options to purchase food and drink in the grounds. This year, the UK is hosting the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine.

For the Eurovision screening, Nottingham City Council is holding a number of tickets for Ukrainian guests, hosts and residents in Nottingham, and will be in touch with them in the coming days on how to get access. Tickets can be booked for the Coronation, Coronation Concert and Eurovision Final screenings via www.whatsonnottingham.com.

Tickets cost just £1 and are inclusive of VAT and booking fees. The screenings have been made possible by funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The series of events will be the first time the historic landmark has been accessible since its closure last year. The Nottingham Castle Trust, which had run the attraction, confirmed on November 21 it had started the process of entering liquidation, having operated the venue on behalf of Nottingham City Council.

The Castle had originally reopened in June 2021 after a three-year £33million renovation, but despite a goal for it to become a "world-class" heritage site, it was marred by a number of high-profile incidents. The Nottingham Castle Trust said the coronavirus pandemic and inflation had resulted in it being "no longer workable" for it to operate the venue.

Nigel Hawkins, Head of Culture & Libraries at Nottingham City Council, said: “I am delighted that we are re-opening the castle gates for these screenings in May. We know people have been eagerly anticipating the castle site being open once again and these events are sure to be a popular way to rediscover it. We encourage members of the public to book their tickets early so they don’t miss out on joining the celebrations in the stunning castle grounds"
