Nottingham attack victims named locally as heartfelt tributes pour in

Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar have been named as two of the victims of the Nottingham "knife and van attack."

The two university students, 19, have been named locally after they were attacked heading home at around 4am on Tuesday, June 13. Another man, who is believed to be in his 50s, was also killed in the city centre rampage.

Nottinghamshire Live reports that three other people were also taken to hospital, after a van drove into a bus stop in Milton Street. One of them is a man who is fighting for his life.

Officers were first called to Ilkeston Road, where both Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar were found. Chief Constable Kate Meynell said a man in his 50s was then stabbed to death on Magdala Road before his van was stolen and used an hour later on Milton Street to allegedly try and run over three people.

The students were both first years and lived in the same halls of residence, a friend said. Nottingham University confirmed two of the three people who were killed were students at the university.

They were stabbed to death just minutes from the halls in Lenton, Nottingham. A friend of Barnaby victim told the Mirror: "He was a friend of mine. He was just walking home from a club like we all do. They just got unlucky. They were just five minutes from home and both got stabbed by some random guy."

The family of Barnaby, from Taunton, Somerset issued a statement to PA news, they said: "Complete devastation is not enough to describe our pain and loss at the senseless murder of our son. Barnaby Philip John Webber was a beautiful, brilliant, bright young man, with everything in life to look forward to.

"A talented and passionate cricketer, who was over the moon to have made selection to his university cricket team. At 19 he was just at the start of his journey into adulthood and was developing into a wonderful young man.

"As parents we are enormously proud of everything he achieved and all the plans he had made. His brother is bereft beyond belief, and at this time we ask for privacy as a family to be allowed time to process and grieve.

"We will not be making any further statements, particularly in relation to the police investigation. We are so proud to release these photographs, chosen by us as a family, of an amazing son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend. Thank you for your understanding, and to everyone who has supported us in this awful journey so far."

Grace Kumar was a member of England hockey teams, the sport's governing body has said. England Hockey tweeted: "We are all deeply saddened by the news of the tragic death of Grace Kumar in Nottingham on Tuesday.

"Grace was a popular member of the England U16 and U18 squads and our thoughts are with Grace's family, friends, teammates and the whole hockey community at this time."

Police have said they were keeping an open mind over the motive for the knife and van attack. A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after the deadly rampage and detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the violence.

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell, speaking outside a police station in the city in a press conference this afternoon said: "Police were called to Ilkeston Road just after 4am after a member of the public reported that two people aged 19 had been stabbed and were unresponsive.

"We had a further call to another incident in Milton Street, where the driver of a stolen van had attempted to run over three people. As a result, one man is in hospital in a critical condition while two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries.

"The van was then stopped on Maple Street, where a man was Tasered and detained by police officers on suspicion of murder. A man in his 50s was also found dead from knife injuries in Magdala Road by a member of the public.

"At the moment, we believe that the suspect has stolen this man's vehicle and driven it to Milton Street, where he has then driven at members of the public We are still in the early stages of the investigation. I need to determine exactly what the motives were behind this attack."
