Animal rights campaigners from Nottingham were part of a group who held a protest outside the entrance to Twycross Zoo. Members of the Leicester Animal Rights and Nottingham Animal Rights groups stood at the entrance to the zoo in Twycross with banners and signs calling for members of the public to boycott the facility.
They held banners in which they claimed zoos were "animal prisons", along with other signs which read "This is not conservation, this is cruelty". There has been no suggestion that the zoo has been cruel to its animals and police were called on Saturday, April 16, after it was claimed the protesters blocked families from entering the venue.
The zoo said that it has the highest standards of animal welfare, Staffordshire Live reports. It is one of the busiest days of the year for the zoo which suffered during the Covid pandemic with bosses saying it lost £5.5 million at the time, which would have an impact on the conservation work that is carried out there, they said at the time.
