Notting Hill Carnival is known worldwide as one of London's most eye-catching festivals of the year.
The carnival began back in the 1960s and celebrates Caribbean heritage, art and culture through the streets of the capital.
Notting Hill Carnival was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 and lockdown restrictions.
Now that the iconic festival is making a comeback for the first time in three years, here's everything you need to know ahead of Notting Hill Carnival 2022.
When is Notting Hill Carnival 2022?
Notting Hill Carnival will take place over the August bank holiday this year, starting on Saturday, August 27 and concluding on Monday, August 29.
What is the Notting Hill Carnival route?
The carnival takes place in Notting Hill in West London but it eventually spills into the streets of Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park, Westbourne Grove, and Bayswater.
The main parade route starts near Westbourne Grove tube station at 9:30am, and it travels down Great Western Road, before making its way to Westbourne Grove and Ladbroke Grove.
The parade route is around three and a half miles long and you can track the parade on the Notting Hill Carnival app, which is available on both the App Store and Google Play.
What is the schedule for this year's Notting Hill Carnival?
The streets of Notting Hill will be packed full of festival-goers, steel bands and booming sound systems over the three-day event.
Saturday, August 27
On Saturday, a family-friendly event called Panorama in Emslie Horniman Pleasance Park will take place.
Panorama kickstarts the Carnival each year and you will need a ticket to enter the event.
At the family event, you can expect live music as the UK’s largest steel pan competition takes place.
Sunday, August 28
On Sunday, the family day of Notting Hill Carnival will take place.
This event, which is called the J’Ouvert Carnival, will begin at around 6am in Ladbroke Grove, with steel bands and African drummers parading through the streets of London.
A few hours later at 10.30am, the children's parade will begin with young performers parading through Notting Hill.
This year, the parade will be led by members of a virtual running community, the Emancipated Run Crew, who will be wearing bright green clothing to commemorate those who died in the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.
Throughout the day, family workshops take place at Emslie Horniman Pleasance Park, with plenty of Caribbean food and drink stalls available.
Monday, August 29
From midday, the busiest day of the carnival will kick off with more than 80 bands in vibrant costumes taking part in the main parade, alongside more than 100 floats showcasing Caribbean heritage.
After the festivities have concluded, there are usually after-parties at numerous venues in Notting Hill.
How to get tickets for Notting Hill Carnival
Entry on the Saturday and Sunday of Notting Hill Carnival is free with no tickets required.
However, tickets are needed to attend the Panorama event on the first day of the carnival.
Tickets for Panorama are available here, priced at £20 per adult and £7 per child.
