Two police officers were sexually assaulted while working at Notting Hill Carnival, the Met Police said on Wednesday.

A female detective was grabbed around the neck and kissed on the face without her consent, a spokesman for the force said.

The Met added that a second female officer was assaulted after being surrounded by a group of men who “danced and grinded against her”.

“Other officers came to her assistance but it was not possible to detain the group at the time,” a spokesman said.

“An investigation into the incident is ongoing. We recognise the impact such offences can have and we will provide both officers with the support they need.

“Neither officer was physically injured.”

Florin Matei, 46, from Islington was later charged with sexual assault in relation to the first incident and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, September 19.

In total 74 officers were injured across the two-day carnival.

Detectives are also continuing to investigate the murder of Takayo Nembhard at the event.

The 21-year-old was found with stab wounds underneath the Westway in Ladbroke Grove at 8pm on Monday.

The musician, who used the moniker TKorStretch, had travelled from Bristol to enjoy the annual event that saw millions attend over the Bank Holiday.
