Notting Hill Carnival’s main parade is in full gear with thousands of revellers partying in west London.
The procession on bank holiday Monday is turning W10 into a blaze of colour as Europe's biggest street party celebrates its 60th anniversary.
It comes as the Met Police said the mood during yesterday’s family day was “overwhelmingly positive and celebratory”.
The force issued a new update confirming that 243 people were arrested on Sunday.
Commander Claire Smart, who is in charge of the policing operation, said organisers have "stepped forward" across the event, including better crowd management, after City Hall gave an extra £4.6 million to double the number of stewards and improve the use of CCTV cameras along the parade's route.
The Standard will keep you updated on all the Carnival news and colour as the party heats up.

What is a drum queen?
18:30 , Niva Yadav
Did you spot the drum queen? Drum queens, or rainha da baterias, are integral parts of samba schools.
They are the lead female dancers and usually parade in front of the percussion section.
Notting Hill Carnival embraces Brazilian bloca bands and samba schools, in addition to celebrating its Caribbean roots.
Watch: The best bits of the Adult's Day Parade

Monday’s Adult’s Day Parade saw hundreds of masqueraders dance their way through Notting Hill.
There was a massive Latin American presence on Monday, as is routine for Adult’s Day, while Sunday leans closer to Carnival’s Caribbean roots.

Sounds of the Caribbean weren’t far behind and soon, the streets were alive with soca music and dancehall anthems. With feather backpacks in tow, masqueraders celebrated Notting Hill Carnival to the fullest.

Watch: London celebrates Notting Hill Carnival
16:00 , Niva Yadav
Londoners on family day celebrated everything that is glorious about Notting Hill Carnival.
Speaking to the Standard, revellers explained what Notting Hill means to them and exactly why it needs to stay in W10, instead of being moved to a park.
'It's about using our creativity to celebrate our ancestors'
15:42 , Niva Yadav
Mas bands turn up year after year, putting on a show for London. In many ways, along with sound systems and steel pan bands, they are the heart of the Carnival and without them, Notting Hill Carnival would cease to exist.
“For me it’s about using our creativity to celebrate our ancestors,” said Symone Williams. Her late father was one of the founding figures of the Carnival and created Genesis - one of London’s most loved mas bands.
Her mother Allyson is on the board of trustees at Notting Hill Carnival.

Party shows no sign of stopping
15:25 , Niva Yadav
Celebrations are still ongoing in W10 and parading bands are still making their way around the route.
But inside the Carnival zone is where things are really heating up. There’s dancing, music, singing, food, and a truly electric energy buzzing around the place.
Revellers mount bus stops as celebrations ramp up

Revellers have been spotted dancing on top of bus stops as they celebrate at Notting Hill Carnival.
The celebrations have certainly ramped up at the Adult’s Day Parade as thousands more flock to the event.
'We always big them up and give them a big round of applause'
15:00 , Niva Yadav
As parading bands pass the North Kensington Fire Station, many will turn their music off and give the firefighters a large round of applause in a touching tribute to those who tackled the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.
Bands will also observe a 72-second silence in memory of those who lost their lives.
Vinny Ranks, owner of Karnival Mania, tells the Standard: “You get very emotional because we saw the fire. I know people in the block.
“I was thinking about my aunty who was underneath the block.”
He added: “When we do go pass the fire station as well, we always turn off the music and big them up. We give them a big round of applause.”
Silence for Grenfell expected at 3pm
14:50 , Niva Yadav
There will be a 72-second silence at 3pm to honour the lives lost during the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.
Floats, mas bands, and masqueraders will all switch off their music and take a moment to reflect. The tower is visible from the parade route, while the parade also passes the North Kensington Fire Station - one of the crews deployed to tackle the blaze.
Yesterday, fire fighters laid down their hats as they paid their respects. In an unfortunate situation, one band missed the silence as it sailed past the firehouse, before issuing an apology to revellers.

Celebrations are in full swing today, as Carnival-goers dance, sing and dazzle in their stunning costumes.
Latin American bands join the Carnival spirit
14:40 , Niva Yadav
As we mentioned earlier, festivities on the Monday usually see Brazilian bloco bands and samba schools join the party.
Sunday leans towards more traditional Caribbean mas and though there are plenty of classic mas bands still on the road, the sounds of soca and dancehall will be joined by samba percussion and drumming.
A lot of the costumes you’ll see also take inspiration from drum-queens at the Rio Carnival.
Here’s a glimpse at some of the samba spirit earlier today:
Council leader hails Notting Hill Carnival 'an incredible event'
14:20 , Niva Yadav
Yesterday Sir Sadiq Khan made an appearance at Notting Hill’s festivities.
Today, the leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council has joined in the fun, posing with revellers in W10.
Cllr Elizabeth Campbell said: “It’s been so much fun being out celebrating Notting Hill Carnival’s 60th anniversary with everyone who has come together to enjoy this incredible event
“The costumes, the music, and the atmosphere are fantastic and it’s a real reminder of what makes Carnival so special.”
She smiled alongside masqueraders from Deluzion Mas - who form one of the sections at Karnival Mania mas band.
Are children allowed at the Adult's Day Parade?
14:13 , Niva Yadav
Children are discouraged from being “on the road” during the Adult’s Day Parade on Monday.
Sunday is reserved for families and young children and even toddlers are allowed to participate in the festivities. Many bands will have a relief truck to aid tired little legs on the route on the Sunday.
But the same measures aren’t in place on Monday, which is primarily aimed at adults. It is also the busier of the days - another reason to keep children at home.
Take a look at footage from yesterday’s Children’s Parade as the next generation proved they have what it takes to carry on the Carnival traditions.
Why are some people wearing t-shirts?
14:10 , Niva Yadav
Eagle-eyed spectators will notice that not all masqueraders are in costume. In fact, many are wearing branded t-shirts as they make their way down the parade route.
Yesterday, the groups wearing t-shirts were part of dutty mas bands - the bands who throw colours and paints. But there’s no dutty mas today. So why the t-shirts?
T-shirts are still worn by masqueraders as symbols of unity. Not everybody can or wants to wear an embellished outfit, but they may still want to be part of the parade. Branded t-shirts are a comfortable and affordable alternative.
However, Carnival rules state that no more than a third of any single band can be in t-shirts.
What is Notting Hill Carnival?
14:00 , Niva Yadav
There are too many people who don’t know the dark roots of Europe’s largest street party.
Notting Hill Carnival was born out of resistance to racial injustices during the 1960s, particularly following the murder of Kelso Cochrane.
Following an onslaught of violence against the Black community, the carnival was created to uplift the neighbourhood and ease racial tensions.
To this day, the event pays tribute to the West Indian community and advocates for equality, diversity, creativity, and freedom.

Recap: Notting Hill Carnival so far
13:49 , Niva Yadav
Notting Hill Carnival is far from reaching its peak. Festivities are beginning to ramp up now.
So here’s a recap in pictures of the Adult’s Day Parade so far:
Where to refuel at Notting Hill Carnival
13:31 , Niva Yadav
Many revellers will be looking for somewhere to refuel. Follow your nose through Golborne Road and Tavistock Road to find some of the best curry goat, patties, Trini doubles, and jerk chicken in London.
Plenty of residents also use the festivities to serve refreshments from their front garden. You can bag yourself a cup of rum punch and a trip to a toilet for just £12!
Masqueraders are all provided food by their mas bands and eat en route, usually with a top-up snack as they near the finish line.
Crowds flood streets of W10
13:20 , Niva Yadav
Festivities are really ramping up now in Notting Hill. Crowds have flocked to the district as music brings the streets to life.
Revellers are surrounding the floats and trucks, keeping the party going.
Meanwhile, jerk drums are working overtime to refuel revellers across Golborne Road and Tavistock Road.
Revellers pay tribute to carnival legends
13:17 , Niva Yadav
Now in its 60th edition, revellers are using the opportunity to pay tribute to Carnival legends.
Creative and wonderfully crafted puppets of key figures have been spotted across the parade route.
The puppets have been crafted by Beat Carnival and are being paraded by Mangrove Mas Band - one of the most iconic and well-known bands to be walking the route today.
'Carnival should be a sense of national pride', says former Met superintendent
13:09 , Niva Yadav
Former Met superintendent Leroy Logan said: “Carnival should be a sense of national pride.”
Speaking to the Standard, Mr Logan said the majority of revellers “come to have a good time” and that “it is only a minority that attend to commit crime.”
He added that pre-emptive arrests should be used as a measure to make carnival safer. Mr Logan has long been outspoken about safety at Carnival.
The Met Police banned 330 people from attending carnival after they were suspected of planning violence.
Costumes tell stories of identity and heritage
13:03 , Niva Yadav
The party is only just getting started, but behind every costume is a story.
Caribbean Sessions (pictured) was inspired by Greek mythology, selecting the theme Olympus. Their costume pays homage to the Greek gods, celebrating London’s diversity.
Founders Colin and Rhianna Julien told The Standard that they offer all costumes in three options: skimpy, standard, and curvy.
“Representation is at the forefront of everything we do,” said Ms Julien, adding that they want every woman to feel comfortable in their costume.
Floats lead the charge at Notting Hill Carnival
12:57 , Niva Yadav
Floats of all varieties are making their way through Notting Hill as festivities ramp up on bank holiday Monday.
Some trucks have built-in toilets, sound systems, and DJ booths, while others take on a more traditional construction.
Other bands don’t have floats at all and rely on their performers to create grandeur as they dance through the streets. There’s usually a good number of performers on stilts too!
72-second silence for Grenfell at 3pm
12:52 , Niva Yadav
There will be a 72-second silence for those who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire at 3pm today.
Many floats also choose to turn off their music as they pass the fire station to give thanks to the firefighters and crews.
Yesterday’s silence didn’t quite go to plan after one float missed the silence, continuing to play music - much to the firefighters’ disbelief.
You can read the full story here:

What is soca?
12:42 , Niva Yadav
There is music from every corner of the Caribbean and beyond at Notting Hill Carnival. From reggae to samba, house to jazz, and everything in between.
But most notably is soca - which is a genre of Caribbean dance music.
It blends calypso tunes with American soul and rhythm, making its way from Trinidad & Tobago to all over the archipelago and now to W10.
Strong police presence at Notting Hill Carnival
12:26 , Niva Yadav
There is a strong police presence at Notting Hill Carnival in a bid to keep masqueraders and spectators safe on bank holiday Monday.
Mas bands are also required to hire their own security crews as they make their way around the parade route, and organisers put plenty of stewards in place across W10.
But even the Met Police officers can’t resist joining in on the festivities.
Love is in the air at Notting Hill Carnival!
12:22 , Niva Yadav
One couple are getting married today. But not before they dance through the parade route!
Mas bands spread their wings
12:17 , Niva Yadav
After a stunning start by London’s samba schools, the traditional Caribbean mas bands are now spreading their wings.
Expect to see embellished feather backpacks, plenty of colour, and bejewelled bodysuits.
United Colours of Mas are one of the largest bands at Notting Hill Carnival, having won plenty of awards for their creative and striking costumes.
They also have a dutty mas band, which participated in the parade yesterday. But today is all about “pretty mas”!

How to travel to Notting Hill Carnival
12:06 , Niva Yadav
Many revellers will now be making their journeys into Notting Hill as the festivities ramp up.
As of noon, the Bakerloo line is suspended between Harrow & Wealdstone and Paddington, while the rest of the line is subject to severe delays.
There are also planned closures on the DLR, Northern, and Windrush lines.

Sound systems set to kick off
12:04 , Niva Yadav
It’s noon, which means one thing for Notting Hill Carnival revellers - sound system time!
More than 30 sound systems will be turning up the volume as they blare soca, dancehall, and calypso tunes through the streets of Notting Hill.
For first-timers, Gladdy Wax and King Tubby’s sound systems come highly recommended. Hidden in a corner of Portobello is also the only salsa sound system too!
The Standard have you covered on all the best sound systems here:

Notting Hill Carnival embraces samba traditions
11:52 , Niva Yadav
Notting Hill Carnival has always been a champion for diversity and inclusivity, platforming artists in London.
The Paraiso School of Samba is formed of Brazilian art directors, who are now exporting the traditions of Rio Carnival to London.
Caribbean mas bands are divided in sections and engage in freestyle dancing, while sound systems blare music from floats and trucks. But samba schools focus on live percussion, synchronised dance routines, and strictly costumed groups.
Watch: Who are the mas bands?
11:44 , Niva Yadav
As crowds admire the spectacular costumes in the Adult’s Day parade, many forget the months of effort that goes into putting on the show.
Mas band leaders aren’t just selling costumes, they’re providing an experience. Each band must provide security, food, transport, and music for its masqueraders - and it’s no easy feat, especially without guaranteed funding.
Party is underway at Notting Hill Carnival!
11:39 , Niva Yadav
The party is well and truly underway at Notting Hill Carnival.
There’s more to come yet. At noon, the sound systems will be given the green light to turn the volume up and pump music through W10.

Parading bands are getting the party started up!
From Brazilian bloco bands pounding their drums to traditional Caribbean mas bands playing the pans, festivities are now ramping up in W10.
Where to eat at Notting Hill Carnival
11:20 , Niva Yadav
The smells of Trini doubles, jerk chicken, and roti are already flooding the streets of W10. Vendors across Notting Hill will be whipping out their jerk pans to feed the masses as they look to refuel.
But aside from the over 250 street food vendors, many residents join in the community spirit and offer rum punch, refreshments, and trips to the loo from their homes and front gardens.
60 years of Notting Hill Carnival
11:16 , Niva Yadav
Notting Hill Carnival is celebrating its sixtieth year. Revellers are paying tributes in all sorts of ways, from flamboyant costumes shaped like birthday cakes, to honouring the roots of carnival through stories of identity.
There are also a few firsts for the Carnival as it celebrates its Diamond Jubilee. For the first time, the Grand Stand is open to the public, while the Powys Square Stage has had a makeover and is now called the Magnum Tonic Wine stage (no prizes for guessing the sponsor!).
Are there more South American bands on Monday?
11:02 , Niva Yadav
Sunday features plenty of Family Mas bands, playing mas to celebrate the heritage and traditions of Caribbean culture. Bands pay tribute to their ancestors from all over the archipelago, waving flags as they dance around W10.
And while Monday promises an even larger celebration of Caribbean culture, the eagle-eyed will notice a strong Latin American presence amongst the parading bands.
The Adult’s Day Parade features a great number of bands from outside the Caribbean, mostly paying homage to Brazilian blocos and samba schools. Instead of sound systems, these bands usually feature drummers and samba rhythms - proof that there is space for everyone at Notting Hill Carnival.
Costumes wow crowds in W10
10:51 , Niva Yadav
Mas bands are now preparing to pass Judging Point as they begin their route around Notting Hill Carnival.
The stunning costumes are about telling stories of identity, culture, and history. They can vary in appearance. Some are sculptural pieces of art, while others choose traditional dress inspired by parts of Africa or South America.
There’s also the “backpack” style of costume - synonymous with Notting Hill Carnival. Think feathers, sequins, and glitter.
Masqueraders from all over the world
10:42 , Niva Yadav
Masqueraders are not just inspired by Caribbean heritage. Notting Hill Carnival is a diverse event with parading bands taking inspiration from all over the world, bringing their heritage and identity to W10.
Some bands, like Bafo do Bando, regularly choose costumes that pay homage to Brazil and the samba culture. While others like Paraiso School of Samba share Brazilian culture through rhinestones and sparkles in a nod to Rio.

More than 30 sound systems will get the party going at around noon, playing out until 7pm. There are also several live stages, including the Powis Square Stage - sponsored by Magnum Tonic Wine for the first time.

Carnival Revellers Mas band really got the party started as they skipped past Judging Point on Great Western Road on Sunday.

Yesterday, parading masqueraders threw chocolate at each other as they danced around the parade route.
Footage shared by a DJ on board the Chocolate Nation Mas float, shows liquid chocolate flying into the air, along with coloured powders and paint.
Most people think of masquerading as wearing intricate bejewelled costumes, but it can also include masking with colours, paints, and chocolate. Derived from traditions in the Caribbean during enslavement, the celebration is now about reclaiming identity and freedom.
People also come from far and wide to celebrate Europe’s largest street party. Dee Jay Puffy is an international DJ from Barbados.
How to get to Notting Hill Carnival?
10:10 , Niva Yadav
Thousands of Londoners will be making their way into west London this morning ahead of the Adult’s Day Parade.
But getting to Carnival is no easy feat. There are more than 100 road closures and several train stations will be closed across bank holiday weekend. So what’s the best way to get to Notting Hill Carnival?
Your best bet is to avoid Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park, and Notting Hill Gate. Instead, opt for a station further afield like Paddington, Shepherd’s Bush or Maida Vale, and walk the rest of the journey.

Europe’s largest street festival is nearly underway on its second day in W10. But forecasters are warning of a spate of rain showers that could dampen festivities.
BBC Weather is forecasting dry weather on Monday morning, but light rain showers later in the afternoon. There will still be sunny spells throughout the day and yesterday was proof that it would take more than rain to stop the party.

What is playing mas?
09:40 , Niva Yadav
You don’t “do mas”, you play mas! Mas - derived from masquerade - means using a costume to bring a character of theme to life. Revellers wear intricate costumes, adorned in feathers and sequins, as they dance and celebrate Caribbean culture.
It’s rooted in resistance to enslavement and is a true celebration of freedom and joy. Anyone can join a mas band, with costumes usually available for purchase from April.
WATCH: Sound systems bring the streets of Notting Hill to life
09:27 , Niva Yadav
The streets of Notting Hill were transformed into one big dance floor on Sunday. From noon, the Carnival’s sound systems took control of the party, blaring music long into the afternoon.
There’s music for everyone, from samba to salsa to calypso and soca. Dancehall hits, like Gaza Slim’s Everything Fi Hold Him, could also be heard kicking off the party. The best part is that it’s not over yet and there will be plenty more dancing and grooving to come.

What are mas bands?
07:30 , Niva Yadav
Carnival arts are a serious business. What may look like a street party to you is in fact months of costume-making, rehearsals, and dedication to put on a showstopping performance.
Mas, derived from masquerade, is just one of the carnival arts you can expect to see today. It’s the art of large, elaborate, sculptural costumes, used to defy oppression and colonialism.
Today, it takes on many forms. While some bands choose to create costumes with hidden meanings and stories, others lean towards bikini mas - a modern style of costume making that comprises embellished bikinis and feather backpacks.

Carnival Map 2026

Notting Hill Carnival can be a pain to navigate if you’ve never been before or don’t have signal.
Here’s a map to help you get around:
How to get to Notting Hill Carnival
07:00 , Niva Yadav
There are several entry points to Notting Hill Carnival, with the closest Tube stations being Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park, Notting Hill Gate, Latimer Road, Royal Oak, and Queensway.
But these stations are likely to be very busy and TfL is likely to make several of these exit-only (or close them altogether) as crowds flock to the carnival.
Your best bet is to walk from a station located slightly further afield, like Maida Vale, Kensal Green, Shepherd’s Bush, or Paddington.
Bus routes do not run inside the Carnival zone, but TfL does operate special, express buses that drop you off right outside the boundary.
Remember that there are planned closures on the Northern line and DLR today too.

What is the history of Notting Hill Carnival?
06:30 , Niva Yadav
You might believe that Notting Hill Carnival is just a celebratory street party. And you wouldn’t be entirely wrong.
But this event, now in its 60th year, is so much more. The carnival was born out of resistance to racial injustices, oppression, and deprivation. Following an onslaught of violence and ostracisation against the Black community, the carnival was an attempt to uplift the neighbourhood and ease racial tensions.
Now in its 60th year, the carnival not only pays tribute to the West Indian community of the 1950s, but it continues to advocate for equality, diversity, creativity, and freedom.

Getting home is no easy feat. Many revellers will start making tracks around now in an effort to beat the rush. Will they? Probably not.
The following stations are now closed: Ladbroke Grove, Holland Park, Royal Oak, and Notting Hill Gate
The following stations are no entry and are exit only: Westbourne Park
You can use Latimer Road, but it’s really busy. Kensal Green has one entrance open on St Terrace Road, but once again, expect to queue.

The best option is to walk further afield. Think Paddington, Maida Vale, Shepherd’s Bush, Queens Park and even High Street Kensington.
What is dutty mas?
Sunday 30 August 2026 17:56 , Niva Yadav
Dutty mas is not to be confused with J’Ouvert. While they both see the throwing of paints and colours, J’Ouvert is a static celebration that takes place at the crack of dawn on Sunday.
On the other hand, dutty mas masqueraders follow the Children’s Parade, throwing colour into the sky and hyping up crowds with music. It’s one of the liveliest parts of Carnival.

What to expect tomorrow?
Sunday 30 August 2026 17:45 , Niva Yadav
Tomorrow’s festivities will look slightly different. It’s Adult’s Day and that means less no on the parade route. Carnival spirit will be amped up as bank holiday Monday typically attracts larger crowds and more energy than Family Day.
There’s no J’Ouvert. Instead, the Adult’s Parade will kick off at 10:30am, followed by the sound systems at noon. There will still be a 72-second silence at 3pm to honour those who lost their lives at Grenfell.
Costumes are stil spectacular and are commonly known as “pretty mas”, though you can expect to see a lot more bikini mas style outfits.

What is a sound system?
Sunday 30 August 2026 16:49 , Niva Yadav
Parading bands will be nearing the end of their 3-mile route, heading towards the finish.
But the party isn’t over yet. Sound systems are running the show inside the carnival zone, playing every kind of music from samba to house and reggae. Soca music is the most popular at Notting Hill Carnival, blending American soul with Caribbean rhythms.
Think of sound systems as portable DJ booths, dotted across W10 - each with their own identity and story to tell.
Personal favourites include King Tubby’s and Gladdy Wax.
Hundreds of people are now gathering at sound systems across the district.

Rain or shine, this was proof that a little rain wouldn’t dampen the festivities.
There were also downpours in 2014 and 2018 - but once again, the show went on and revellers danced in the rain.
