'Notorious thieves' pinch from Leeds house while workmen stand metres away

Leeds residents have been hit by 'notorious thieves' in the area taking building equipment from construction works at their homes.

Jane Wade, 51, from Morley has shared CCTV footage of men taking some building equipment from workmen who were working metres away from the act - she claims the thieves are notorious in the South Leeds area with lots of reports on Facebook community groups.

The footage she shared on Facebook has had over 3,000 views with lots of comments from people saying the thieves were targeting areas close by.

Jane is currently having a new drive fitted at her home in Morley, the workmen who are fitting the drive were busy working no more than a few metres away from their equipment.

She said: "It seemed to be an opportunist theft, we think we have seen where they come from.

"Work is currently being done on Victoria Road in Morley so its sending a lot of traffic this way and I don't know if it gave these guys opportunity to be here. Because the diversion is in place it's a lot busier with traffic here - the passenger jumped out the car, nicked it and was gone.

"I posted the CCTV footage in lots of Facebook groups and loads of people in Drighlington and Yeadon have seen them doing it - it happened twice in two weeks from same people.

"It seems they are just driving around looking for builders, one of my builders was in the garden near the equipment, it was that quick."

The video shows a Mercedes van with blacked out side windows - Jane is urging people to be vigilant of this van to prevent the act happening again. She added: "Notorious seems to be case, its a hot target. I want to make people more vigilant and aware."

The incident has not yet been reported to the police but, Leeds Live has asked West Yorkshire Police for more information on similar thefts in the area.
