Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has called for the security debacle around the Champions League final to become a "watershed" moment for how the authorities police such fixtures in football.
And the Reds skipper says the harrowing events outside the Stade de France on May 28 should never be allowed to happen again.
Supporters at the stadium were subjected to horrendous treatment as they tried to get into the ground itself for the UEFA showpiece with Real Madrid as police indiscriminately used tear gas on fans of both teams, while local pickpockets were in operation.
As many as 9,000 written testimonies were submitted by Liverpool fans last month, according to CEO Billy Hogan, and a UEFA inquiry is currently underway. The ECHO understands a detailed report has now been compiled by fans for the inquiry leader Dr Tiago Brandao Rodrigues to read as part of the European governing body's investigation.
Jurgen Klopp revealed last month that his family were caught up in the chaos outside the ground while Liverpool chairman Tom Werner sent a strongly-worded email in June to the French authorities, who initially tried to blame Reds supporters, before a subdued apology was eventually given by interior minister Gerald Darminin.
Henderson has now spoken out about the events in Saint-Denis and demanded the incidents lead to a widespread reform on how supporters are treated by those in power.
“I always go into the new season not wanting to dwell too much on whatever happened in the previous one – for better or worse – but there is one element that I do want to look back on and that is the treatment of our fans in Paris," Henderson writes in his pre-match programme notes for Crystal Palace game.
“I know there is an inquiry going on at the minute, so I don’t want to say too much at this stage, but there is a basic principle that needs to be agreed on by all involved in football and that is that football supporters should always be taken care of.
“That is absolutely non-negotiable. Safety and security shouldn’t be asked for or campaigned for, they should be a given and in Paris this was not the case. All of the players and staff had family and friends who were caught up in the problems outside the stadium so we are all well aware of what went on and what went wrong. The only conclusion that anyone can come to is that something like that can never happen again.
“I’m not just speaking for our supporters here either. Every single football fan needs to know that when they go to a match, the authorities will look after them. For that to happen, Paris needs to be a watershed. It has to be a moment that brings about change for the better. Nothing else is acceptable.”
