'Not good enough' Gabriel Agbonlahor calls for Newcastle United to sell striker

Gabriel Agbonlahor has labelled Newcastle United’s signing of Chris Wood in January as ‘crazy’ and reckons the Magpies should send him back to Burnley for as little as ‘£6million’. The 30-year-old, who joined from the Clarets for an £25million, has found the net just twice in 17 appearances and started on the bench in three of his final four matches, while a hip injury kept him out on the Magpies’ 2-0 win against Arsenal in the penultimate game.

Speaking to Football Insider the former Aston Villa forward believes Newcastle should cash in on the New Zealand international.

“They could do with another striker as back-up to Callum Wilson,” Agbonlahor said. “Chris Wood is not good enough, that was a crazy signing at £25million. If they could send him back to Burnley for £6million or £7million, they would. They need better quality now as back-up to Callum Wilson. He has his injury problems as well so you don’t want to be left with Chris Wood.

“Another striker and another couple of wingers too. I like [Allan] Saint-Maximim but he blows hot and cold. Almiron doesn’t get enough goals or assists. I think Newcastle’s squad could do with more surgery.”

With Wood in the side for the majority of games since his move to the North East, Newcastle won 12 of their last 19 matches in the Premier League to climb out of the relegation mire and to within two points of a top half finish.

They’ve also shored up their defence with the signings of Nick Pope and Sven Botman from Burnley and Lille respectively, while Matt Targett’s loan move being converted into a permanent deal could also prove shrewd business.
