'Not enough people care' - Mansfield residents on what they would like to see more of in town

No place is perfect and residents everywhere would happily make a change or two to their area if given the chance. With that in mind we headed to Mansfield to ask shoppers what they would like to see more of in their town centre - and we got some interesting responses.

Shoppers were crying out for more clothes shops, particularly branded ones, and less charity shops and hairdressers. In truth, the general consensus around people in the town was that it was in need of a regeneration.

Paul Dickinson, 77, said: "It's not just that there aren't many shops, it's that the ones that are here are rubbish. Where do I start? I would just like to see more shops that are useful for people and make people want to come here.

"It's certainly going downhill at the moment but I don't think there are enough people that care, they're focused on other things. Nobody is focusing on the things that matter in Mansfield.

"The people in charge think the people are thick but they're not. This is a mining town; I've been a miner all my life and it's sad to see it like it is now."

Anne Shields, 56, who lives in Forest Town, said: "Luckily I moved a bit further away from the town centre years ago but I still come into town when I need to.

"There are far too many charity shops I think and that's something that people speak a lot about I can tell you. I'd hope to see more branded, big-name clothes shops.

"I think that's something that would definitely improve the area and attract some people back to it because if you look at it now, well for the last 10 years really, it's rapidly declined. I don't see a good reason that anybody would want to come to Mansfield. What is there to do here?"
