'Not bad': Diamonds coach rapt at drubbing of Jamaica

Coach Stacey Marinkovich is bullish about the early signs of her tinkering and trimming of the world's No.1 netball team.

Marinkovich oversaw a 31-goal thumping of an under-strength Jamaica in the opening of the three-Test series in Adelaide.

The margin of the Thursday night thumping - a 72-41 result - was only partly why Marinkovich was pleased.

The Diamonds coach used all 12 players in her squad as she tested the depth ahead an eagerly-anticipated Commonwealth Games campaign starting in July.

"It was good to get that versatility," Marinkovich said.

"And when we really had intent out there, we had some good ball movement and some good contests.

"It's just getting the consistency - but not bad for a first game."

Marinkovich deliberately chose only 12 players, instead of the usual 15, in her squad for the Jamaica series that continues in Perth on Sunday and Melbourne on Wednesday.

"The girls that did miss out, they certainly aren't playing themselves out of selection or contention," she said.

"But at the same time, the Diamonds haven't been with a 12 on tour for probably the last 18 months; we have really travelled with a bigger group.

"At some point, you need to see what we are like when we narrow in a little bit, just the way we function travelling, the way we're moving our combinations.

"And maybe we been able to take away some of the pressure of selection, just allow the players to know that this is the group right here and now and they have got a job to do.

"It is definitely different from a 12 to a 15, but the experiences we have had with the larger group has given depth to our group.

"It has definitely pushed the standard and the expectation across the group and the players take on the responsibility when they're selected to now represent the broader group."

The collective ruthlessness of the first Test drubbing also satisfied Marinkovich.

"The girls really pride themselves on making sure that they drive the standards within," she said.

"And it's something that, regardless of who we come up against, we have got to make sure that we're presenting.

"And making sure that we're transferring what we do in the training environment to the performance environment and I think they really tried to do that."
