Norwich City star has fracture confirmed after Canaries suffer Premier League relegation

Cambuslang's Kenny McLean has had a toe fracture confirmed by Norwich City manager Dean Smith.

The Canaries suffered a Saturday to forget in Premier League action this weekend as they lost 2-0 against Aston Villa, confirming their relegation.

They are bottom of the division but McLean didn't play a part in the match, despite being picked to start in midfield.

He had suffered the injury last month against Manchester United but was prepared to play through the pain barrier to make the match in Birmingham.

Warming up with discomfort proved it would be a bridge too far for the Scotland international.

A period of rest will now be granted as a drop back to Championship level awaits.

Smith told Norfolk Live : “He [McLean] was named [in the starting line-up] and he has obviously been having injections in his toe. He felt it in the warm-up and I made the decision to pull him out.

“He has got a fractured toe which will recover. But we felt it was worth the risk him getting injected and playing on through it. We will just let the fracture heal now.”

Smith commented prior to the match: "Kenny is not training this week. He is just doing off feet work and conditioning on bikes and stuff and then he’ll have an injection to train [Friday] and then an injection to play, if selected.

“It is one, that years ago, you would have probably taped up and got on with it. That is how football was, but now we have got a medical department who can take the pain away.

"So we will go and do that. He won’t want any sympathy that is for sure.”
