Norway’s Crown Princess said she was manipulated into meeting Epstein — then a leaked email exposed a truth no one expected

Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit recently offered a tearful explanation for her past relationship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, claiming she was “manipulated and deceived.” However, a newly released email from 2011, part of the U.S. Justice Department’s release of documents related to Epstein, directly contradicts her defence.

Reuters reported that in an interview with public broadcaster NRK, Mette-Marit expressed deep regret. “Of course, I wish I had never met him,” she said of Epstein, attempting to contain one of the most significant scandals to hit the country’s royal family. She emphasized that she “never seen anything illegal” during their interactions. The crown princess, who is 52, has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing, but the situation is definitely an awful look for her.

The newly released files, however, paint a picture of frequent, often flirtatious communication between Mette-Marit and Epstein that continued long after his conviction in 2008. The documents show Mette-Marit even stayed at his Palm Beach house for four days during a private trip in 2013. This extensive relationship has prompted unusual rebukes, even from the prime minister, and demands for a full account from the princess.

I wonder what Epstein’s reaction would be to see his entire network backpedal this way

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said it was important Mette-Marit had answered questions about her relationship with Epstein. In an emailed statement, he noted, “She regretted her contact with him and she was genuinely remorseful. She took responsibility for not having checked his background more thoroughly.”

What really throws a wrench into her “manipulated” narrative is a specific email from October 2011. In the email, Mette-Marit wrote to him that she had Googled him and agreed “it didn’t look too good,” followed by a smiley face. When NRK pressed her about this email, she claimed she couldn’t remember why she wrote it, “but if I had found information that made me realise that he was an abuser and sex offender, I wouldn’t have written a smiley face behind it.”

This should give you pause. In her initial statements in 2019, she apologized for not investigating his past and said she would never have associated with him had she known the seriousness of his crimes.

Beyond the Epstein scandal, the crown princess is also navigating some tough personal struggles. She suffers from a chronic lung disease that will eventually require a lung transplant. On top of that, her eldest son from a previous relationship, Marius Borg Hoiby, is currently on trial, accused of rape and other crimes.
