Northumberland travel company to close after tragic death of owner and local legend

A Northumberland travel company has announced its closure just months after the tragic death of its owner.

Baynes Travel has been in business for more than half a century, but recently announced on its website that it would no longer be operating after owner and cherished figure of the Allendale community Nigel Baynes passed away in March. Mr Baynes, a retained firefighter, died on Thursday March 10 in an accident at Baynes Coaches whilst off-duty.

He joined his father's travel business in the 1970s and remained at the helm until his death, alongside his role as chairman of the Allendale Drama Group where he starred as the village's long-serving pantomime dame. He also founded the Allendale Fair in 1983.

Following Mr Baynes' death, flags at fire stations across the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service were flown at half mast as a sign of respect and mourning. And now, it has been announced that the family's business Baynes Travel will close later this month.

A statement on the Baynes Travel website read: "Further to the recent tragic death of Nigel Baynes, founder and owner of Baynes Travel, we are immensely saddened to announce that we shall regrettably be closing the business from 24th July.

"We wholeheartedly thank our friends and customers for their love, loyalty and support, and for the memories we’ll cherish forever. Thank you all and we wish you well."

Deputy Chief Fire Officer at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service Graeme Binning paid tribute to Nigel following his death in March. He said: “Nigel was a pivotal, popular, and respected member of Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service’s Allendale crew, and has been since he joined the service in 1980. This length of service is a clear example of Nigel's commitment and dedication in providing a service to his community.

“He will not only be missed by his family, friends, and colleagues, he was also a key and prominent figure within the Allendale community. Our thoughts, best wishes and focus are now with all those who have been affected by this tragedy."
