Visitors to Northumberland have one more chippy to add to their list after another was named among the best in the UK.
Just days after revealing that four of the top fifty beaches in the UK are in the North East, with South Shields' Sandhaven coming out on top and three Northumberland beaches also making the list, The Times has named a Seahouses chippy in the UK's top 10. Lewis's Fish Restaurant on Main Street is just a stone's throw from one of said beaches, St Aidan's Sands, and is our region's representation alongside chippies in Whitby, Cornwall and Musselburgh.
One of a handful of chippies in the fishing village, Lewis's was deemed the pick of the bunch due to being cheaper than its main rival, Neptune. As well as serving traditional fish and chips, the family-run business does crabs and lobsters which are caught locally and landed in Seahouses on the day they're served.

Of Lewis's, travel writer Chris Haslam wrote: "I asked 11 dog walkers on Beadnell and St Aidan’s beaches to nominate the best chippy in the district. Three of them turned out to be tourists, but among the remaining eight opinion was split down the middle between Neptune and Lewis’s, 70m apart on Main Street, Seahouses.
"So I asked a man cutting a hedge to settle it. "They’re both exactly as good as each other," he said after some thought.
"But Lewis’s is 95p cheaper." These days, every little counts.
And it seems that reviewers on TripAdvisor hold Lewis's in high esteem too. One recent visitor described it as the best chipper in town, writing: "Take out fish and chips for four on our first night in Seahouses from the busiest chippy in town, queued for about 20 minutes but it was well worth it, beautiful crispy batter, lovely haddock, chips were plentiful and drenched in vinegar.
"Everything was freshly cooked, piping hot and superb. Highly recommended."
Another wrote: "Got take out cod and chips which was best I’d had in a long time. Was served quickly and although had to wait for my order to be ready, it was worth it as it was obviously freshly cooked. Tasted amazing."
A third wrote: "Visited recently with slight trepidation that the fish and chips wouldn't be as good as remembered from the last visit 18 months ago. I was so wrong we ended up getting take out twice this time!
"Tried both the lobster bites and the monkfish this time around - 10/10 would recommend both if they have them available. Generous portion size. Excellent batter. Friendly staff and reasonably priced for the quantity and quality."
