Northern Railway issues do not travel warning as it cancels trains due to storm and staff shortages

Northern has issued a "do not travel alert" for part of its rail network and is urging passengers to check for updates before they travel as a combination of weather and staff shortages has led to trains being cancelled.

Northern Railway says there is disruption between Carlisle and Newcastle, Newcastle and Morpeth/Chathill, Carlisle and Nunthorpe, and more severe problems further south in Yorkshire and the North West.

Services were cancelled and amended in the North East and Cumbria this morning, with rail replacement buses in use. Northern says the disruption is due to damage caused by Storms Eunice and Franklin, as well as staff shortages.

Passengers using the network in the North East are urged to check with Northern's live updates and amended times before they travel. It is urging passengers planning to use Northern trains in Lancashire, Cumbria, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Cheshire to not travel before 12 noon.

Northern is also asking passengers planning journeys via the Leeds-Shipley route through Leeds, Skipton, Ilkey and Bradford Forster Square in Yorkshire to not travel due to flooding on the line.

Northern says: "Bad weather across the UK continues with high winds and heavy rainfall across the Northern network causing disruption.

"Customers should expect delays and cancellations and are advised and to check before you travel.

"Please check your trains as close to the time of your departure as possible and we urge you to consider whether your journey is necessary."

Elsewhere on the rail network, TransPennine Express (TPE) is strongly urging customers to “avoid travel if possible”, particularly those planning to travel north of Preston in Lancashire before 10am.

Speaking on Sunday evening, TPE operations director Paul Watson said: “Due to the impact of Storm Franklin, train services are disrupted along the West Coast Mainline.

“The safety of our customers and staff is our priority and we are warning customers not to travel between Preston and Edinburgh/Glasgow until after 10am tomorrow.

“Anyone planning on travelling by train today or before 10am tomorrow can choose to defer their travel or claim a refund.”

LNER cancelled some early morning trains between Edinburgh, Newcastle and London, and has warned of slow speeds between Doncaster and Leeds.

CrossCountry has advised customers not to travel due to severe disruption and said trains will not be calling at Doncaster.
