Northern rail launches one million 50p train tickets in biggest ever flash sale

Network operator Northern rail is inviting customers to kick start 2023 with a flash sale that will see ticket prices slashed on selected journeys.

From 10am on Tuesday, January 10, Northern rail customers will be able to purchase their choice of one million tickets at just 50p. There will also be a further three million £1 tickets and one million £1.50 tickets up for grabs.

Passengers could use the super-cheap fares to enjoy a day out in Carlisle taking in the castle and its ancient city walls or hit the shops in Newcastle for less than the price of a cup of coffee.

Alternatively, let the train take the strain and rumble through the Northumberland countryside stopping at destinations including Haltwhistle, Bardon Mill, Haydon Bridge, Hexham, Corbridge and Prudhoe.

Speaking about their biggest flash sale ever, Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: "We know our customers travel for a multitude of reasons – so our hope is this sale will make five million of them – be they for days out, weekends away or catch-ups with friends - that bit more affordable."

He also said that: “Customers should book early to avoid disappointment. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.”

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with nearly 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England. With passenger numbers still struggling to reach the numbers seen prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, cheaper ticket prices could entice travellers back onto trains.

Rail Minister, Huw Merriman, said: “This flash sale is five million chances to see family, friends or just get out and around for prices as low as 50p. We need to get people back on our railways and initiatives like this will do just that.”

The promotion also includes a range of other routes around the North of England and Yorkshire including Hull to Bridlington, Barrow-in-Furness to Manchester Piccadilly, Chester to Stockport, Blackpool South to Preston, Warrington Central to Liverpool Lime Street and Harrogate to Knaresborough.

The sale runs until 4pm on Friday, January 13 and tickets are valid for travel between Tuesday, January 17 and Friday, March 10 on Northern services only.

Northern’s new timetable came into effect in December 2022 and all customers are advised to use the new 'Check My Timetable' feature on Northern’s website to see changes specific to their local station.
