Northern Quarter restaurant shortlisted for national ‘food lovers’ award

District, the ultra-modern Thai BBQ restaurant in the city’s Northern Quarter has been announced as one of the finalists in a new category as part of the Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards. District is one of 10 finalists to make the cut of the new ‘Food Lovers Award’.

The award has been created to give restaurant goers across the UK the chance to get involved by having their say on the best places to eat out across the UK. The winner will be announced at the Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards on Monday, June 13 at The Hurlingham Club in London.

Opened in May 2021, by the team behind nearby Japanese restaurant Tokyo Ramen, District took over from an old off-licence on Oldham Street, and turned the venue into a futuristic-styled space with white tiles and pink lighting.

The Northern Quarter venue describes itself as a ‘new wave Thai kitchen’ inspired by a future Bangkok. Here, diners can watch their food be cooked over a wood-fired barbeque, or enjoy a cocktail in the bar tucked away in the basement.

Guests can choose from two menus - one a £50 introduction to their food, and the other a longer dining experience priced at £100. Both explore progressive barbeque cooking, whilst retaining a focus on traditional Thai cuisine.

Since opening last summer, the restaurant has been met with rave reviews thanks to its modern approach to Thai food. Dishes span from ‘Not Tacos’ topped with short rib with massaman curry, to raw bass in a pool of zingy ‘nam jam’ (fish sauce, palm sugar, lime).

In the run-up to the event, award organisers have released shortlists for other categories as well, including ‘UK’s Most Sustainable Restaurant’, which features Stockport’s very own Where The Light Gets In.
