Northern Pride reveals star-studded line-up as Newcastle plays host to UK Pride 2022 celebrations

A star-studded line-up has been revealed for this year’s Pride celebrations in Newcastle.

Spice Girl Mel C, singer Louise Redknapp and X Factor star Joe McElderry are among the performers who will take to the main stage at Newcastle’s Town Moor. It will be the first time that the event has taken place in person since the start of the pandemic, following two years in a row of virtual celebrations.

Northern Pride are pulling out all the stops as the hosts of UK Pride 2022, making sure to showcase the region’s LGBTQ+ talent. More than 90% of the acts involved are from the North East, with artists, performers and creatives all taking part in the spectacular show.

Celebrations will take place from 22 until 24 July, drawing on this year’s UK Pride theme of Remember, Resist and Rise Up. Northern Pride director Ste Dunn said he was “thrilled” to see the triumphant return of an in-person event this year and promised that it would be one to remember.

Saturday 23 will see Mel C take a spot on the main stage for a DJ set, alongside North East singer Karen Harding and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Choriza May. On Sunday 24 Louise Redknapp will headline the entertainment, with performances from DJ Adele Roberts and South Shields-born singer Joe McElderry.

DJ Adele shared the exciting news on Twitter, saying that she “can’t wait” to be part of the Northern Pride line-up. “Always a good night in Newcastle. They know how to party,” the star wrote.

Louise added that she was “so excited” to be taking part in the festivities, while local lad Joe told Twitter followers that he was “thrilled to be performing”. And that’s not all the jam-packed weekend has in store.

The event will be rounded off with Ibiza in Symphony, described by organisers as “one of its most ambitious performances to date”. Featuring the talents of DJ Michael Maddison, a live orchestra will play a number of dance classics with the support of some of the region’s most talented vocalists and musicians.

The weekend will also see campaigners taking to the stage, including President of the European Pride Organising Association Kristine Garina. Kristine will reflect on recent events around the world, including the war in Ukraine, and the impact that they have had on the LGBTQ+ community.

The iconic Pride March will take place from 12 noon on Saturday 23, and celebrations will come to a close on Sunday 24 with a candlelit vigil with a range of activities and events throughout the weekend. You can find out more on the Northern Pride website.
