The Northern Lights treated the North East to a dazzling display early on Monday morning.
Press Association photographer Owen Humphreys is an expert in capturing the Northern Lights, both in the North East of England where he is based and Iceland, where he teaches students.
Owen headed to St Mary's Lighthouse, near Whitley Bay while most of us were tucked in bed late last night and stayed until the early morning to take spectacular photos of the aurora borealis, a phenomenon caused by activity on the sun's surface.

Usually, the closer to the arctic you are, the better your chance of catching the Northern Lights, but they can be viewed in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham when conditions are right. Often, when there is a chance of snapping the Northern Lights, Owen is there.
With his photos taken from St Mary's Lighthouse, Owen tweeted: "What an incredible show of the Northern Lights know as the #aurora here in Whitley Bay on the North East coast last night and into the early hours."

Astronomer Dan Monk snapped the Northern Lights at Kielder Observatory, Northumberland, a remote part of the North East that is ideal for stargazing.
"An amazing display of the northern lights captured at the observatory last night", tweeted the Kielder Observatory account.
