Trading Standards investigators have found one in ten bags of coal tested were ‘short weight’.
Officials lifted a total of 1,107 bags of coal across Northern Ireland discovered 103 weighed less than they should have, an issue they say “may be contributing to the cost-of-living crisis”.
The investigation by the Department for the Economy’s Trading Standards Service was carried out over the last three months and saw TSS officers visit 35 retail premises across Northern Ireland. They checked the weight of both 20kg and 25kg bags of coal “to ensure consumers are getting what they pay for”.
