A small country town has been rocked after a mother allegedly stabbed her teenage daughter yesterday afternoon.

Police received several triple-0 calls from the area alerting them to a disturbance at a Dysart home around 4:15pm yesterday.

Mackay Acting Detective Inspector Emma Novosel said police arrived to find the teenager stabbed six times in the chest.

Inspector Novosel said the 36-year-old mother had several minor wounds, which were understood to be self inflicted.

Inspector Novosel said police did not know what triggered the alleged attack but police were still at the scene on Tuesday investigating.

The pair lived together at the home but it was unknown how long they had been in the region.

The mother also allegedly attacked a 20-year-old man at the house who is believed to be a friend of the victim, but Inspector Novosel said no knife was used.

"He actually intervened in the incident," Inspector Novosel said.

The teenager was initially taken to Dysart Hospital then Mackay Base Hospital in a critical but stable condition and has since been transferred to Townsville Hospital.

The woman was taken to Dysart Hospital, where she allegedly assaulted one of the police officers.

Inspector Novosel said the officer did not require medical treatment but support had been put in place for emergency services who attended the scene.

"It's always an incident that, I guess, when you turn up it's a bit confronting," Inspector Novosel said.

The woman was charged with attempted murder, common assault, and serious assault of a police officer.

She was taken to Mackay Base Hospital where she was awaiting a medical assessment in order to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on Tuesday but the matter has been adjourned until tomorrow.
