North Lanarkshire councillor reveals local authority to submit bid for levelling-up cash for Ravenscraig

A North Lanarkshire councillor has revealed the local authority will submit bids for UK government levelling-up cash for projects in Ravenscraig.

The UK Levelling Up Fund will provide £4.8bn worth of capital investment across the UK over the next five financial years for local infrastructure projects with £800m of this ring-fenced for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The aim of the bid is to advance and promote development at Ravenscraig, building on the existing and committed development and investment.

It includes proposals for a community hub, houses and flats which will form part of council’s new supply programme and potential commercial or business space and financial support for remedial and enabling groundworks, electricity and water infrastructure and drainage.

Motherwell councillor, Kenneth Duffy, told Lanarkshire Live : “I am confident following meetings with council officers that North Lanarkshire will be putting forward a strong bid.

“The Ravenscraig site is one of great importance nationally and its right we focus on creating a place with high quality housing, transport links, education and employment opportunities and space to exercise, play and safely enjoy the outdoors.”

Last month we revealed that an application has been submitted for a number of new retail units in Ravenscraig.

The proposal, for applicant O’Brian Properties Ltd and agent Scott Graham, is for a commercial parade with eight units, drive-thru and electric vehicle charging hubs on a site to the south of the Marston’s Inn development (Ravens Cliff) at the junction of New Craig Road and Prospecthill Road.

To the north of the site, the proposed Ravenscraig Retail Hub would also consist of 29 double EV charging parking spaces designed to incorporate the range of size of new electric cars.
